When a stock opens significantly higher or lower than yesterday's close.
A gap up means the open is above yesterday's close (often due to overnight news). A gap down is the opposite. Gaps signal strong overnight sentiment. "Gap and go" stocks continue in the gap direction. "Gap fill" stocks reverse to close the gap. Volume confirms which scenario is more likely.
