VIX

The "Fear Index" — measures expected market volatility over 30 days.

VIX below 15: market is complacent (tight stops work). VIX 15-20: normal. VIX 20-25: elevated fear (widen stops). VIX 25-30: high fear (be selective). VIX above 30: crisis (sit out or only short). Rising VIX = increasing uncertainty = bearish pressure on stocks.
